The Commission of Missing persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Aceh has urged the Indonesian Military (TNI) to withdraw its personnel from Nisam Antara district, North Aceh regency, because the presence of swarming military personnel has various psychological impacts on those Acehnese who have already experienced armed conflict.
The situation in Nisam Antara was tense after two soldiers were abducted and killed by an unidentified armed group. It was reported that the number of military personnel in the area had increased to pursue the killers.
“Although the victims were Army personnel, the authority to find the perpetrators belongs to the police. The military should return to its base,” Kontras Aceh coordinator Hendra Saputra said on Wednesday.
According to Hendra, the case was now under the police’s investigation and the military should wait for the process to be finalized.
On Tuesday, two abducted soldiers, First Sgt Indra and Second Sgt Hendri, were found dead in Alue Mbang village, Nisam Antara district. They were abducted on Monday after they were gathering intelligence on the Din Minimi armed group.
Din Minimi is a former Free Aceh Movement (GAM) member who is now fighting against the Aceh government. (nvn)(+++)
